Harlem Dances (2018)

for string Orchestra

8 minutes

Performed by the Millennial Chamber Players

Prefatory Note

Harlem Dances is a melting pot of aural cultures. The opening rhythm re-imagines a Reggaeton rhythm and spins into an array of different cultural sounds that I have heard living in Harlem and Washington Heights for the past five years. Within it are the sounds of American rap and hip-hop, Jewish folk music, Latin dances, New Age sound baths and Javanese gamelans; culminating into a crescendo of light and electricity — the life force of this great city.

The string orchestra version was commissioned and premiered by the Washington Heights Chamber on November 3, 2024 in New York City for their Folklore Program.
